Everything you need to know about CryptoCloud

What is zero-knowledge encryption?

Zero-knowledge means we never see your unencrypted data. Your files are encrypted in your browser using your password before being uploaded. We only store encrypted blobs — we cannot read your files even if we wanted to.

What happens if I forget my password?

Due to our zero-knowledge architecture, we cannot recover your data if you forget your password. Your password is used to derive the encryption key, which never leaves your device. We recommend using a password manager and enabling 2FA for account recovery.

Can CryptoCloud staff access my files?

No. Your files are encrypted client-side with AES-256-GCM before upload. The encryption keys are derived from your password and never sent to our servers. Even with full database access, we can only see encrypted data.

How does file sharing work?

When you share a file, your browser encrypts the file key with the recipient's public RSA key. Only they can decrypt it with their private key. For public links, the decryption key is included in the URL fragment (after #) which is never sent to the server.

Is CryptoCloud open source?

Yes! CryptoCloud is fully open source. You can audit our code, self-host your own instance, or contribute to the project on GitHub. Transparency is core to our security model.

What file types can I preview?

You can preview images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG), PDFs, Word documents (DOCX), spreadsheets (XLSX, CSV), and code files with syntax highlighting. All previews happen in-memory without writing to disk.

How much storage do I get?

Free accounts get 5GB of encrypted storage. Since we use client-side encryption, the stored file sizes are slightly larger than the originals due to encryption overhead.

Is my data backed up?

Yes, your encrypted data is stored redundantly on enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure. However, remember that only you hold the encryption keys — we cannot restore access if you lose your password.
